Manganese sand is a purple-black filter medium that is used for the removal of soluble iron, manganese and hydrogen sulfide from well water supplies. It also has the capacity to remove radium and arsenic.
It is produced from the mineral glauconite (zeolite). Using iron exchange properties of natural zeolite, a manganese dioxide coating is deposited on the surface of the glauconite grains. The manganese dioxide acts as a catalyst in the oxidation reduction reaction of iron and manganese.
Physical characteristics:
Color: Purple black
Effective size: 0.30 – 0.35 millimeters
UC (D 60): < 1.6
